Upcoming changes to road rules for motorcycle riders

As announced on http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Queensland-road-rules/Motorcycle-road-rules.aspx  a number of changes to road rules affecting motorcycle riders in Queensland will commence in early 2015.

Changes in brief are:

1. Lane filtering

2. Allowing motorcycles to stop in Bicycle storage areas

3. Motorcycle control i.e.  Position of hands and feet on the motorcycle

4. Motorcycle helmet changes

In all I think it’s a positive step forward (just having the government think about us is a step forward)

Personally I have used lane filtering a lot when I lived in Sydney……Peak hour traffic is just a night mare. It must be done at a speed where you can comfortably stop if you need to.

Remember a lot of car drivers take offence to bikes been able to move while they are stopped in traffic and have been known to close up the gap or worse open a door. The only way to combat this is to ride SLOWLY while filtering.

Another tip if you are at the front of a row of cars at a set of traffic lights….ALWAYS LOOK for that car that may be running a red light……Look before you go!

Please remember that these laws do not come into effect until early 2015.
